Sustainability for Future
The project’s objective is to empower HEIs to integrate sustainability and entrepreneurship into their core activities.
Head of business relations and entrepreneurship, VIA University College Contact
The “Sustainability for Future”project responds to the pressing need for higher education institutions (HEIs) to play a pivotal role in fostering sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship. This aligns with the EIT HEI Initiative’s call for action, which emphasizes capacity building within HEIs to tackle global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and social inequality. By embedding sustainability into entrepreneurial ecosystems, HEIs can lead Europe’s transition to a sustainable, inclusive economy.
The project’s objective is to empower HEIs to integrate sustainability and entrepreneurship into their core activities through three pillars: entrepreneurial teaching and learning, preparing and supporting entrepreneurs, and fostering entrepreneurial ecosystems. Leveraging the HEInnovate framework, the project unites nine partners across Europe, including seasoned institutions and emerging contributors. Together, the consortium combines deep expertise in sustainability management, entrepreneurship, and innovation with strong regional and international networks.
Structured into five interconnected work packages (WPs), the project develops interdisciplinary curricula (WP2), establishes Sustainability Hubs for localized incubation (WP3), and activates regional ecosystems (WP4), all underpinned by robust project management (WP1) and impact evaluation (WP5). This approach integrates teaching, research, and business creation, addressing the EIT Knowledge Triangle and fostering systemic change within HEIs.
By 2027, “Sustainability for Future” will have directly engaged 1,200 students and 240+ academic and non-academic staff, supported 80+ startups, and activated two regional valleys as innovation hubs. The project creates a blueprint for scalable sustainability-driven entrepreneurship, ensuring HEIs remain central to Europe’s innovation ecosystem. With its transformative potential, the initiative will enhance institutional resilience and contribute to achieving the EU’s green and inclusive growth agenda.
